back to the demon

because ... well ... why the hell not ...?

it's a dirty job, but somebody's got to do it.

Staff Meeting:

I've been doing lots more weapons practice these days, which I've been very happy with so far. Fighting with swords, staves, and other such implements has a kind of romance that's very different from the feel of hand-to-hand combat and gunfire.

Obviously, George Lucas felt that way, and the world wouldn't be filled with toy lightsabers if it weren't so.

David Englander in flight

One of the people I've been sparring with lately has been David Englander--just back from the Conquest series on the History Channel--who's great to work with. One of the amazing things about David is that he is so skilled and knowlegeable, yet he can look so innocuous.

A lot of the people I work with and train with are extremely capable athletes...and look it. David is every bit as capable, but is totally able to blend with a crowd while doing all kinds of stunts safely. That can definitely have its advantages.

All the same, I'm happy not to look innocuous. Standing out from the crowd has its advantages, especially in the trying times ahead.

(I'm referring, of course, to the Christmas shopping season.)

...It would have been even nicer if "long underwear" really was long...

Gotta do something about my amazing "farmer tan," though. My legs look even sillier than my shoulders, after a summer's worth of wearing bike shorts, sunblock or no sunblock.

Inducted:

It's not easy getting costumes that fit right...or any kind of off-the-rack clothing. Normally I cope with this by wearing boots a lot, which disguises the oh-so-popular "high-water pants" look.

I'm usually too cheap to buy custom-tailored clothing, but for movie purposes, you're often dealing with clothing that isn't commercially available anyway, so you might as well have it made to fit. Right now Darlene Cypser is working on putting together a historical action/drama/adventure and, once again, I'm likely to end up wearing as many different outfits as the rest of the cast put together.

Which is why I ended up getting covered in duct tape...so when it was cut off, there'd be a full-scale clothing dummy that more-or-less matched me. "More-or-less" because it ended up being a little tight in the chest--next time you find yourself being covered in duct tape, be sure to breathe in and hold most of that breath during the process. It'll be a better fit and more comfortable while you're waiting to be cut out of it, too.

It's an interesting look, you must admit. With all of the live-action movies based on comic books being made these days, maybe somebody's going to try doing a "Silver Surfer" movie. The duct tape look might be just the thing...at least as long as I don't have to walk, bend my arms, or inhale.

I'd probably have to cut my hair, though.

duct tape man

Under the duct tape, I'm wearing long underwear; that makes it more comfortable to get it off, too. It would have been even nicer if "long underwear" really was long, instead of also being "high-water" style. Oh, well.

We're moving!

24th annual American Film Market

Okay, to be honest, we're only changing offices at the upcoming 24th annual American Film Market. Previously, we'd been in office number 825, but the distribution company next door (and the door after that) decided that they wanted to expand to three offices for this coming market. I'd liked being in 825; it's a corner office with an anteroom that faces down the hallway, which is good for visibility.

So, the AFMA offered to switch us to office 525--which is another corner office, but it's got the added advantage of being just down the hall from registration and just up from the main lobby. I was pretty happy with that.

...and then the distribution company that had wanted to expand into 825 decided to cut their budget instead...so they didn't want 825 after all. But I liked 525 better anyway, so I'm sticking with that, and I think it'll all work out for the best.

I don't know who's going to be in 825 this year, but if you're attending the market, drop by the Inferno Film Productions office (number 525) and say, 'hi!'
